In my opinion, the emulation in general with UAD is so much closer to its hardware counterparts than the prices are.
If the preference for the Neve sound is indeed not part of the argument, then one must consider whether the differences between the hardware and software versions are in proportion to the differences their prices. I don't quite buy the argument that these are bad emulators, though. I think part of it for a lot of people just may have more to do with whether they like or dislike the Neve sound. Thanks again for another insightful test, Phil. If anyone decides to try this for themselves, please post your results. The test is easy enough to reproduce though. I wish I could post these for you to A-B yourselves, but I don't have a web site.
I've polled 7 people so far (all musicians) as to which they like better. I must say, although I can hear a slight difference between the two if I listen reeeeeaaaalll closely, I don't prefer one over the other. Then I removed trim plug and A-B'd the tracks.
After much fiddling with the controls I got just a hint of consonances from the vocals and the bass drum attack. I then tweaked the 1176 until I got as close to nothing out of the sum as possible. I bounced this to disk as a 24 bit stereo file and placed it in 2 stereo tracks in a new DP project, one track containing the 33609 MSTR-soothing and the second track containing the 1176LN and a trim plug set at 0db and both channels inverted. The recording is the final mix of guitar, drums, split keyboard (bass & some clav-like sound), vocals, and tenor sax. I picked the "MSTR - smoothing" preset on the 33609 because it sounded particularly good on the material I chose for the test. Ok, since I've seen disagreement on this board as well as the U-Audio board over how good or not so good the Neve 33609 compressor plug-in is, I decided to do a blind test.
James, I apologize in advance if this post is in the wrong forum, but most people here who use the UAD-1, use it with DP.
